Winter 2008The past couple of years have been very challenging for Rhonda both personally and professionally. Rhonda went through a difficult life experience with the loss of her oldest brother May 22, 2007.
All the hard work of finally launching Dawn Records and releasing two singles from her debut album Rhonda Towns “I Wanna Be Loved By You” proved to also be challenging and a ground breaking milestone for her in the genre of Country Music. Since the early 1980’s there had been no other woman of color since Ruby Falls to get radio airplay on country music radio stations.
In June of 2005 with not much knowledge of how to secure radio airplay Rhonda used herself as the “guinea pig” to see if country music radio stations would play her song on the radio. She asked her friend and mentor, producer, icon and former label head “Harold Shedd” to refer her to a radio music promoter who would help market her music to country music radio stations to get her song heard on country music radio.
Her gut feelings proved to be right and Rhonda received very warm and welcoming responses from her first release “I Wanna Be Loved By You” with Secondary and Music Row Panel country music radio stations supporting her new release. The doubt and skepticism had finally been broken.
In April 2006 she followed up with a second release from her album song titled “Somethin’ Better” written by Bo Allen which officially charted #63 on the Music Row Charts. Rhonda Towns “Somethin’ Better” music video also received strong television video airplay in 57 markets across the United States. Rhonda had truly initiated and helped to bridge the gap between age and color lines in Country Music since Charley Pride for women of color in the 21st Century.
In the year 2000 Rhonda made her debut appearance in Zurich as a headliner at the “16th Annual International Concert of Switzerland” followed by her national appearance and performance on the BET Network. This officially made her the First Female African American Country Music Artist to debut in Switzerland and the BET Network.
In the world of Country Music Rhonda is still considered an Independent Country Music Artist. Her album was voted by “Indie-Music.com” one of the Top 25 Independent CDs of 2007. This still puts her in a category of not being able to compete with Major Country Music Record Labels who so often dominate the radio airways and saturate the country music radio market with country music artists that sound the same and independent artists like “Rhonda Towns” can’t get “mainstream” radio airplay because of “lack of funding” and the Major Label’s monopoly on the country music industry is very strong. The great news is that Independent artists like Rhonda Towns and Independent labels are getting noticed in all genres of the music because of the Internet, youtube.com, myspace.com, Digital Music Downloading, and Direct E-mail Communications and Marketing via the Internet.
There are many groundbreaking accomplishments that Rhonda has achieved as a true pioneer in the country music industry which cannot go unnoticed. Her determination, faith and drive has inspired and attracted many others of color to pursue music careers in the Country Music industry as she continues her pursuit and career in Country Music.
Most recently Rhonda came back on the scene of Country Music with the official release of her third single “Slow Rain” written by Dobie Gray (Drift Away), Bud Reneau, and Ricky Ray Rector from her album Rhonda Towns “I Wanna Be Loved By You” May 22, 2008. Rhonda had not intended to release another single from this album. The single is timeless traditional Country Music and was released “by request”. “I’ve really been concentrating on my next project and I had no set plans to officially release another single from this album, “Rhonda said. “I received a call from Michael Sexton the Music Director of a country music radio station in Sparta, North Carolina who told me that a listener requested “Slow Rain”. ‘So I asked him to test this song for me. The response was positive and very encouraging. “Slow Rain” is one of the first songs I recorded with producer Norro Wilson when I started going to Nashville after appearing as a Champion on “Ed McMahon’s Star Search.”

Since the release of “Slow Rain” it has been featured in “Country Weekly Magazine, charted #17 highest position on the New Music Weekly Charts, tied #1 for six weeks on AllAboutCountry.com with Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” single and is now moving up on The Music Row Charts. Rhonda has also been promoting and visiting country music radio stations personally across the United States in support of her new release “Slow Rain” to keep the excitement and momentum going for this original beautiful romantic country music song.
Rhonda hosted her 2nd Annual Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona Free Concert November 14, 2008 at the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center, Queen Creek, Arizona for the Foundation. This will continue be a yearly event for years to come for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona.
